Job Description

This AmeriCorps position will be “housed” at the Robinson Community Learning Center (RCLC), as the AmeriCorps Program is overseen by the RCLC Manager, but the AmeriCorps member will serve at the Boys & Girls Club of St. Joseph County.

The mission of the Boys & Girls Clubs of St. Joseph County is – To inspire and enable all young people, especially those who need us most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens.

Specific Responsibilities include:

  • Serve as the volunteer coordinator for community members, local businesses, colleges and universities other than the University of Notre Dame,

  • Recruit volunteers for active service to all Boys & Girls Clubs sites, and coordinate group volunteer efforts to engage student-athletes, classes and other service groups through on-campus recruiting, participation at Internship Fairs, and other face-to-face opportunities to interface with prospective volunteers.

  • Conduct intake sessions and/ or interviews for prospective volunteers in a timely and standardized, unbiased selection process.

  • Design and deliver a Volunteer Orientation, implement Volunteer Recognition Programs in collaboration with Club staff, and facilitate systematic recording of volunteer data.

  • Participate in staff meetings and AmeriCorps trainings throughout the year.

  • Collaborate with Unit Directors and fellow staff to plan, organize, and implement educational Club curriculum, programs, and activities, including small group, large group, individual, and community-based activities, primarily focused on integrating academic disciplines such as math, science, and language arts.

  • Instruct and mobilize volunteers to help school-age students make progress in math and reading skills.

  • Develop and implement tools and reports to monitor academic gains and measure progress.

  • Research, budget, plan, and implement experiences for Club members, with particular focus on content areas of educational support, tutoring, and academically stimulating experiences.

  • Coordinate with administrative team and Club staff to coordinate schedules and space use, acquire supplies, facilitate activities, and troubleshoot and promote smooth reconciliation of any less than favorable volunteer outcomes

  • Coordinate tutoring program, which includes developing individual learning goals for each child, and incorporates focused research-based tutoring strategies aligned with Indiana State Standards.

  • Gather and organize resources for tutors, conduct tutor training, and develop/implement system for monitoring progress.

  • Communicate with parents, attend informational meetings, participate in training, maintain relationships with partners, and use evaluation tools to improve and revise lesson plans and instruction.

  • Assist in assessing and tracking the progress of children in the tutoring program. This includes administering the SCOUT Achieve pre- and post-test to each participant, and monitoring ongoing progress of each child using a range of assessment tools, as well as collecting and analyzing data.

  • Track student and tutor attendance, assist site coordinators to prepare daily lesson plans/materials, arrange for substitutes to cover absences, ensure that testing is done at appropriate times, report assessment results, prepare parent progress reports and other communication, and track/submit timesheets.

  • Document activities through photographs and text, and submit information regularly to the BGC web site, volunteer Facebook page, Snapchat and Instagram.

  • Oversee and coordinate special projects as requested.

  • Attend weekly Friday morning AmeriCorps meetings at the Robinson Community Learning Center (RCLC).

AmeriCorps is a national service organization aimed at helping communities meet needs in areas, including education, by building capacity of community organizations. AmeriCorps is providing funding for the RCLC to have 10 full-time members during 2018-2019. These are service positions, rather than traditional “jobs.” Full-time AmeriCorps members are expected to complete a full term of service (1700 hours). They will receive a Living Allowance in equal payments throughout the term of service. On completion of service, the member will receive an Education Award.

Full Time AmeriCorps members will be compensated as follows:

Monthly Living Allowance: $1,248 Education Award: $5,920 (on completion of 1700 service hours) Health Care Child Care Assistance (if eligible)

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma required, Bachelor’s Degree preferred.

  • US Citizen or lawful permanent resident alien.

  • Reliable transportation.

Additional Qualifications include:

  • Clear understanding of and commitment to the mission of the Boys & Girls Club

  • Excellent communication skills—-both oral and written

  • Interest in education, working with at-risk youth, and community development

  • Public speaking and the ability to teach/train others

  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects at the same time

  • Computer skills including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and some on-line systems

  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

  • Flexibility to work in a variety of settings

  • Sensitivity, compassion, and listening skills required to work with a diverse audience including:

  • BGC and RCLC staff, volunteers, and fellow AmeriCorps members

  • Notre Dame and community partners

  • Program participants

  • Families of youth participants

Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree.

  • Spanish-speaking a plus
