Indianapolis Motor Speedway Director, IMS Communications in Indianapolis, Indiana

The Director, IMS Communications is the individual in charge of developing the overall communications plan to promote the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and its events. This includes all forms of messaging to media members and key forms of messaging to the general public across multiple platforms. This individual works across several mediums within the organization, actively leading or participating within cross-functional teams charged with reaching key enterprise goals.

SPECIFIC DUTIES:

  • Develops yearly communications plan for IMS and its events, helping to drive attendance, increase public profile and meet overall business strategic goals.

  • Responsible for raising year-round profile of key IMS event weekends, including the Indianapolis 500 and Brickyard 400.

  • Oversees department budget.

  • Communicates with all partner PR/media departments and oversees all media servicing and media operations at IMS events.

  • Leads and coordinates development of all publicity announcements and events/stunts. This includes advance media events and new event announcements.

  • Prepares speeches and message points for senior executives.

  • As necessary, serves as spokesperson for the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and its events.

  • Oversees media credentialing process for all IMS events, including concerts.

  • Develops IMS PR community outreach plan and establishes strong relationships with key community stakeholders.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Oversees a Senior Manager of Media Relations, Communications Manager, and seasonal employees. Assists in the supervision of IMS Digital Team.

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Public Relations, Advertising, Journalism, or equivalent experience.

Skills/Experience

  • At least 10 years’ professional communications experience or extremely relevant and equivalent experience.

  • An inspirational leader with proven and effective experience in executing communications plans and crisis back up plans.

  • High integrity, confidentiality, and a strong work ethic; strong desire to succeed, eagerness to learn, professionalism and passion for communications and sports industry.

  • Strong people skills, management skills, time management, resourcefulness, responsiveness.

  • Innovative thinker and self-starter, ability to work well under pressure and with others.

  • Effective communications skills, including the ability to project a positive image of IMS and answer difficult questions while serving in an official spokesperson capacity.

  • Proficiency in establishing priorities and managing details.

  • Knowledge of all the Penske Entertainment related properties including the NTT IndyCar Series.

  • Strong understanding of 21st Century media landscape.

Travel/Work Hours

  • Flexibility of work schedule to support the team and company as required. Ability to work evenings and weekends and travel out of state.
