General Summary/Purpose:

The CTY Online Tutorial Assistant – Math or Chess will work with online instructors and supervisors to complete a variety of tasks related to course instruction and delivery.

This position will primarily support our Chess program offerings or our AP math offerings.

Currently, our program offers the following chess courses:

  • Introduction to Chess Grades 4 – 12 (https://cty.jhu.edu/online/courses/mathematics/introduction_to_chess_sess.html)

  • Intermediate Chess Grades 4 and above

Multiple Positions Available

Primary Duties and Responsibilities :

Math Tutorial Assistant responsibilities will vary, and may include:

  • Staffing, leading, or working with students in clubs for courses related to chess, cryptology, competitive math, and other enrichment topics.

  • Running, planning, staffing, and troubleshooting weekly group sessions for traditional and enrichment courses via videoconferencing technologies.

  • Proofreading, editing, and monitoring the quality and accuracy of final course evaluation documents submitted by instructors in a given course.

  • Assisting with course development tasks as assigned through implementing changes provided.

  • Assisting with quality control and ensuring all courses meet accessibility guidelines.

  • Communicating regularly with instructors and supervisors.

  • Working as a team member to provide support to CTY Online Programs instructors and supervisors, as necessary.

  • Submitting hours worked via established system according to schedule provided by CTY.

  • Additional duties as assigned.

Minimum Required Education and Related Work Experience:

  • High school diploma/GED required.

  • Experience working as a tutor or teaching assistant for at least one semester is required.

Required Special Skills and Knowledge:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; positive, proactive, and professional written and verbal communication skills using various technologies is critical.

  • Familiarity with online course management systems.

  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite.

  • Proficiency with Gmail-related Google Apps.

  • The ability to work with a virtual, diverse, population.

  • Must be student-oriented and detail oriented

Preferred Special Skills and Knowledge:

  • Advancement toward a Bachelor’s degree in mathematics or related field preferred; Bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university is highly preferred.

  • Candidates should have a strong background and interest in chess, or mathematics

  • Knowledge or ability to learn basic HTML, LaTeX, and Moodle

  • Proofreading and editing skills

Computer or Other Special Needs for this Position:

  • Must have a PC or Mac computer with broadband internet access and administrative rights.

  • Teaching, coaching, or tutoring background with a school age (K-12) audience.

  • Familiarity with online education technologies a plus, such as Zoom and Teams.

  • A successful candidate must be fluent with email and be able to adapt to new educational technologies such as Learning Management Systems and methods of communicating mathematics with students.

Physical Requirements for the Job:

  • Ability to sit in a normal seated position for extended periods of time.

  • Ability to access and transmit information using a computer.

  • Dexterity of hands to operate a computer keyboard, mouse pad and other office machinery.

  • The incumbent will be required to communicate regularly via telephone and face to face with internal and external audiences and must be able to exchange accurate and timely information in these settings.

  • Work hours vary and are flexible; including weekends and evenings as determined with supervisor.

During the Influenza ("the flu") season, as a condition of employment, The Johns Hopkins Institutions require all employees who provide ongoing services to patients or work in patient care or clinical care areas to have an annual influenza vaccination or possess an approved medical or religious exception. Failure to meet this requirement may result in termination of employment.

The pre-employment physical for positions in clinical areas, laboratories, working with research subjects, or involving community contact requires documentation of immune status against Rubella (German measles), Rubeola (Measles), Mumps, Varicella (chickenpox), Hepatitis B and documentation of having received the Tdap (Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) vaccination. This may include documentation of having two (2) MMR vaccines; two (2) Varicella vaccines; or antibody status to these diseases from laboratory testing. Blood tests for immunities to these diseases are ordinarily included in the pre-employment physical exam except for those employees who provide results of blood tests or immunization documentation from their own health care providers. Any vaccinations required for these diseases will be given at no cost in our Occupational Health office.
