Jewish Community Center Camp JCC Summer Camp Counselor in Indianapolis, Indiana

Principal Responsibilities: If you can distinguish poison ivy from harmless underbrush, win staring contests with large spiders, or if the idea of singing "Cotton-eyed Joe" or saying "Shabbat Shalom" every Friday makes you grin instead of grimace, you're well on your way to being an awesome Summer Care Counselor at the JCC! The JCC Summer Camp is the place for you! The JCC is seeking energetic, responsible Counselors to provide a safe and memorable experience for our children and their families. This summer our program will be following new guidelines from the CDC and ACA related to COVID-19 to best protect campers and staff. This requires a revisioning of our program so that it continues to engage, delight and development children while maintaining the safety measures we've all become familiar with (including social distancing, frequent handwashing, etc.).The most successful candidates have never-ending patience, a genuine desire to work with children and a passion for summer programming. We encourage teachers, graduate and undergraduate students and 11th/12th grade high school students who have a desire for 'endless summer' fun to apply! Note that this position requires a commitment for the entire season of June 1 - July 23rd (plus orientation). * May 11th OR 13th 6pm - 9pm * May 12th 6pm - 9pm * May 15th OR May 16th 9am - 2pm * May 23rd 9am - 6pm *_Responsibilities Include_* * Follow all mandated safety guidelines related to social distancing, hygiene and PPE; * Know, understand and be able to implement ALL emergency procedures associated with the summer care program; * Know, enforce, and follow all safety guidelines associated with the summer care and all program areas. This includes but is not limited to being responsible for your campers' safety, health & well being, and their whereabouts at all times; * Use sound judgement in all situations; * Model the behavior you expect of campers; * Develop and implement a weekly schedule for your group; * Organize and lead a variety of small group activities each day; activities may include crafts, nature, songs, games, sporting events, etc. * Be available to work hours between 8 am - 6 pm. * Proactively identify and respond to participant behavior issues; * Ensure that the area is kept clean, organized, and free of litter; * Proactively communicate with parents about participant's experiences and report concerns to Director; * Immediately alert Director and/or Assistant Director when camper behavioral issues escalate; * Participate in staff meetings as required; * Assist in maintaining accurate program records including incident reports, logbook documentation, and daily attendance; * Exemplify JCC Internal Service standards of respect, gratitude, communication, the golden rule, and ownership/accountability. Position Competencies for Success * The ability to work effectively with others in all levels of the organization in a professional manner; * Excellent Interpersonal skills; * Positive attitude & reliable attendance; * Commitment to the growth and development of youth; * Commitment to being fully engaged and present when working with children; * Excellent judgment, ability to identify problems and works quickly to find solutions; * Patient, caring and creative; * Flexible, adaptive and a team player; * Desire to make a difference in the life of a child. # Minimum Qualifications: Qualifications, Skills & Experience*__ * Must haves: excellent interpersonal skills, resiliency, and a can-do attitude; * At least 1-2 years of experience with childcare, teaching or camp counseling required; * Strong organizational and time management skills; * Demonstrated skills in conflict mediation; * Upon hire, completion of First Aid and CPR certification; * Ability to lead, plan, organize, and implement program activities; * Ability to work as a member of a team and the ability to accomplish tasks without constant supervision; * Strong communication skills with the ability to interact with diverse groups of campers, parents and staff; * Prior experience in a leadership position working with children. _Physical Demands & Working Environment_ * Tasks involve the ability to exert moderate physical effort which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight (up to 75 lbs), bending stooping, stretching, squatting and sitting; * Must possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of children; * Must have visual and auditory ability to keep track of multiple children and to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to program activities; * Effective and clear communication is essential between children and staff; * Noise level can be moderate to loud; * Frequent exposure to outside elements, such as sun exposure, heat, humidity and rain; * Must be able to perform essential program support for program activities which may include: standing for long periods of time; walking outdoors extended distances; traverse some uneven and/or hilly terrain; swim and be exposed to chlorinated water & sun screen. * Must have the ability to physically manage and support children when necessary for safety during program activities (children weighing 50 - 150 lbs.). # Salary: Under 25,000 # Agency Information: Whether you come to the JCC to work out, swim, shoot hoops, hang out at the water park or bring your kids to a class, you can count on feeling better when you leave than you did when you came in.
