POSITION TITLE: Day Camp Sr. Counselor (18 years old +)

LOCATION/DEPT: East Chicago Corps

REPORTS TO: Day Camp Unit Leader


STATUS TYPE: Temporary Full-Time


Work under the direction of the Day Camp Director to ensure that the Day Camp is in keeping with the overall plans, goals, and directions of the Corps.



  • Will use the Youth Developmental Assets to track outcomes and develop program goals.

  • Take part as a leader to youth in regards to their daily class rotation and field trips.

  • Assist as directed with set-up, registration time, opening, closing and clean-up.

  • Understand that the overall theme of the Day Camp will have a Christian emphasis.

  • Read, sign and abide by the Safe-From-Harm Policy.

  • Attend the orientation prior to the start of Day Camp and debriefing.

  • Attend training and receive certification in Safe-From-Harm and COVID Safety.

  • Help with maintaining the sanitation and cleanliness of the program space. This will require cleaning, set-up, and breakdown of the program space.

  • Other duties as assigned.



  • Must have completed the 11thgrade.

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.

  • Experience of working with children, preferred.


  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Strong leadership skills.

  • Understand and uphold that Day Camp overall will have a Christian emphasis.

  • Demonstrated ability to use initiative and be a self-starter.

  • Attention to detail.

  • A positive attitude and the ability to be flexible in light of changing job situations/priorities.

  • A commitment to the mission of the Salvation Army.


  • This position is required to do moderate physical work and must be able to lift 10 pounds.

  • In order to successfully perform the essential functions of this position, the employee is regularly required to remain stationary for some periods of time; use hands and fingers; communicate; move; occasionally required to position self to stoop, kneel, or crouch; frequently required to reach with and use arms and hands, as required in using standard office equipment and PC.

  • The work environment for this position includes indoor and outdoor environments with a low to high noise level.

  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include vision, distance vision, and ability to focus.

  • Maintain positive work atmosphere by behaving and communicating in a manner that fosters and maintains positive relationships with co-workers and supervisors. This would include but not be limited to such actions: resolution of conflicts in a positive manner; courteous treatment of staff, clients, and visitors; respect of others’ property and person, professional and appropriate communication to and about co-workers, supervisors, and subordinates.
